David S. Taylor
David Sherman Taylor, 81, of Barbours, died Friday, June 30, 2006 at the Williamsport Hospital.
David was born in Drexel Hill on April 1, 1925, to the late Arthur and Catherine Guss Taylor. David grew up in Springfield, and was educated in the Springfield School District.
He was an avid sports fan and participated in football, basketball, track and baseball in his younger years.
Mr. Taylor was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 through 1946 in the Pacific Theater. Upon his discharge from the Navy, David attended West Chester Teachers College, where he attained a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Studies and Health and Physical Education. He then attended Temple University, where he earned a Maters Degree in Education.
David was a teacher in the Perry School District, the Maple-Newton School District and the Lower Merion School District. He retired in 1974 after having taught for a period of 25 years.
David moved to Barbours in 1975, where he and his father enjoyed the mountains and hunting for Indian Artifacts.
David was a life member of the Plunketts Creek Volunteer Fire Company and an 11 year volunteer at the Taber Museum and Historical Society.
He is survived by a cousin, Harriet Taylor Adams of Harborton, Va.; cousin-in-law, Doris Thompson of Wilmington, Del. and her children, the Rev. Paul W. and Elisabeth Thompson of Lansdowne, David and Suzanne Thompson of Dover, N.H., and Judith and James Walker of Wilmington, Del.
A graveside service and burial in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Pottstown, will be on Thursday, July 6.

A note from one of Mr. Taylor’s first students:

So sorry to read about the death of one of my most memorable teachers.  I have often spoke of him - and his motivational style of teaching.  I appreciate the web site - - a great tribute - - I was a 1961 student of his at Marple Grade school.  As he was a Navy man, I too became.  After 31 years in the Navy as an officer, I retired in 2003 at the grade of Navy Captain.  I then went to work as the Iraq Coordinator for Antiterrorism Assistance for the U.S. Department of State.  I currently serve as a senior outreach coordinator for a U.S. Congressman here in PA - assisting our many veterans of PA as well as our active and reserve military serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Mr. Taylor was a motivational accelerator - and will always be remembered by me as an exceptional American hero.
Bravo Zulu - as we say in the Navy - - Well Done.

As any of you who had Mr. Taylor as a teacher know, one of his great hobbies was hunting arrowheads with his Dad, Pops. Mr. Taylor left behind literally thousands of arrowheads and other ancient relics that they found in the fields of Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Delaware. I have tried to acquire as many of these as I can along with documentation from Mr. Taylor and his father. If any of you former students out there would like these as momentos, I would be happy to send some to you.
